Product Review - Yamaha YPT-230 Portable Keyboard
Yamaha's YPT-230 is a 61-key, organ style, ultra-portable keyboard. It is the perfect beginner instrument, and could also be very useful as a take-everywhere, backup keyboard. It can be powered off of batteries, and doesn't even weigh 10 pounds, making it the perfect no-hassle, no-worries instrument for those who want to play piano anywhere they go.
If you get bored practicing with Yamaha's authentic stereo Portable Grand sound, you can choose from 384 other voices (371 XGlite + 13 Drum/SFX/SE Kits). Be a one-man band with 100 present styles with accompaniment. All you have to do is play a note or chord of the key you want, and the styles will automatically provide a beat and background instrumentals. You can easliy control the styles with intro, main x 2, fill-in, and ending buttons, and you will look and sound like a pro while doing it. I find the styles very fun to play around with.
The YPT-230 also features Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S Version 6), which is an invaluable tool for beginners. It is useful for ear training and becoming familiar with different chord formations (thanks to the handy Y.E.S chord dictionary). The YPT-230 has a large song library, made up of 102 pre-loaded songs that you can follow along with and master using Y.E.S.
Other notable features of the Yamaha YPT-230 Portable Keyboard:
-32 note polyphony
-GM (General MIDI) and XGlite compatablilty
-MIDI IN/OUT
-Metronome
-Transpose (-12 to +12)
-Reverb (9 types and Ultra Wide Stereo)
-Portable Grand button (resets the keyboard to Portable Grand voice anytime you press it)
-Headphone jack
-Sustain Pedal jack
-92mm x 32mm Custom LCD Display
The dimensions for this instrument are (W x H x D) 37-3/16" x 4-5/8" x 13-11/16", and it weighs only 4.5kg (9lbs., 11oz.). It comes in a smooth looking black finish, and the interface is very clean.
The Yamaha YPT-230 Portable Keyboard is a great choice for beginning piano players, and anyone with tight monetary and spacial constrictions. It is also a very functional back-up instrument and travel companion. The YPT-230 is small and neat, but packs all the necessary keyboard features. (I do need to point out that this keyboard does not offer built-in recording capabilities, but it can be hooked up to a computer through MIDI. If you need built-in recording, check out the YPT-230's big brothers listed below).
